Terms & Definitions

Let’s set the ground work by defining some key terms around the neurodiversity movement. Below are definitions from Dr. Nick Walker’s essay, “Neurodiversity: Some Basic Terms & Definitions”. We highly recommend reading her full essay available on her website here.

Neurodiversity: the diversity of human minds. Similar to how we think of cultural diversity, neurodiversity is the existence of variation and diversity in the brain.

Neurodivergent: having a brain that differs significantly from the dominant brain type and social definition of “normal”.

Neurotypical: having a brain that falls within the dominant brain type and social definition of “normal.”
