  • ACT is type of therapy based on the belief that helps clients accept difficult thoughts instead of trying to control them. The intervention guides clients to “identify personal values and life goals, learn to make life-enhancing behavioral changes accordingly, and develop new and more flexible ways of thinking about and responding to challenges.”

  • addiction: “a state of psychological or physical dependence (or both) on the use of alcohol or other drugs. The term is often used as an equivalent term for substance dependence and sometimes applied to behavioral disorders, such as sexual, Internet, and gambling addictions.”

    codependency: “a dysfunctional relationship pattern in which an individual is psychologically dependent on (or controlled by) a person who has a pathological addiction (e.g., alcohol, gambling)”

  • anxiety disorders: “any of a group of disorders that have as their central organizing theme the emotional state of fear, worry, or excessive apprehension. This category includes, for example, panic disorder, various phobias (e.g., specific phobia, social phobia), and generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders have a chronic course, albeit waxing and waning in intensity, and are among the most common mental health problems in the United States.”

  • The mind and body are not independent entities; rather, they influence each other and are influenced by external forces in the environment. Understanding the mind-body relationship can also inform one’s understanding of conditions like chronic pain. Somatic work and polyvagal theory are also related interventions to strengthen your mind-body connection.

  • CBT is a form of psychotherapy that believes “cognitive, emotional, and behavioral variables are functionally interrelated. Treatment is aimed at identifying and modifying the client’s maladaptive thought processes and problematic behaviors through cognitive restructuring and behavioral techniques to achieve change.”

  • DBT is a therapy intervention based in the concept of dialectics, the greatest one being between “helping individuals to accept the reality of their lives and their own behaviors on the one hand and helping them learn to change their lives, including dysfunctional behaviors, on the other.”

    There are 4 categories of skills that it teaches: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

  • body image: “the mental picture one forms of one’s body as a whole, including its physical characteristics and one’s attitudes toward these characteristics”

    Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and are characterized by disordered eating and disrupted relationships with food.

    sexuality: influenced by gender identity, orientation, attitudes, and activity.

  • Grief is often present in reaction to the death of an important close other, but it also applies to losses and transitions in general. Grief can happen when someone moves to a new neighborhood, is going through the loss of a relationship, or is coping with the end of a friendship.

    Healing from grief is also complicated - there is no structure to healing, and there is no linear process.
